Pakistan captain Salman Butt has appealed against his suspension over allegations of spot-fixing, International Cricket Council chief executive Haroon Lorgat has confirmed.

Butt, alongside seam duo Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif, was banned from playing by the ICC after a series of allegations made by the News of the World and subsequently followed up by a Scotland Yard investigation.

All three were given a right to appeal and Lorgat told BBC Breakfast on Wednesday: "We are making good progress. Just yesterday we received a request from Salman Butt to consider lifting the suspension. As expeditiously as possible we will conduct a hearing to consider that appeal."

Lorgat defended his organisation's response to the claims that all-but derailed Pakistan's recently concluded tour of England.

The governing body have been criticised in the past for being slow to act on match-fixing but Lorgat is content they have moved quickly and fairly to the new allegations.

"If you think about the incidences that have transpired, we promised action and we are making good progress to see it through," he continued.

"It is a legal process we must follow and we will do our level best to eradicate any sort of corruption in the sport.

"We've also got a very strong education programme in place and there are many instances we avoid.

"Many players follow the code and keep the sport free of corruption. The one or two cases we do uncover, we must deal severely with."
