Brayshaw promises 'more of the same'

John Inverarity, a Mike Brearley type of cricket man, spent only two-thirds of the last summer with Kent but made a major impact.

Before returning home to Australia he was able to coax the county to third spot in the Championship and a first trophy in six years - the Norwich Union League.

Inverarity is now headmaster of the most prestigious school in Perth and his coaching position has gone to one of his close friends, Ian Brayshaw.

"It will be more of the same," said 60-year-old Brayshaw. "My style is to do things quietly and work round the edges.

"I am not a demonstrative man. John and I think the same way, and when he captained Western Australia I was his vice-captain."

This approach may well lead to further success for a team without any real stars. The closest they come is Australian one-day international Andrew Symonds and David Fulton, who was on England stand-by last winter. Fulton will be four-day captain this season with Matthew Fleming in charge of the one-day side.

"It's not easy to share captaincy but so far in the pre-season matches it has worked well," said Brayshaw.

He expects much of batsmen Ed Smith and Robert Key, while he views Mark Ealham as a central figure with the ball. Behind the stumps, Brayshaw believes Paul Nixon has the ability to break into the England team.
