Ban on Fiji sparks row with Aussies

The International Rugby Board has decided to withdraw its invitation for Brisbane to host a rugby sevens tournament after the Australian Government said it would not rescind a ban on the Fijian team from competing.

Following a coup by George Speight in Fiji last year, the Australian Government instituted a ban on sporting contacts with the South Pacific island nation.

The Australian Government recently said it would not change its position concerning the ban, meaning the Fijian team, which won the Brisbane event last year, beating Australia in the final, would not be allowed to attend the event, which will take place from the 16-17 February.
