Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei has shattered Paula Radcliffe’s women’s marathon world record with a stunning performance to win the Chicago Marathon.

Kosgei romped home in 2:14.04, taking more than a minute off Radcliffe’s mark of 2:15.25, which she set when winning the London Marathon in 2003.

Radcliffe was present to congratulate Kosgei at the finish line.

Kosgei’s effort comes just a day after Eliud Kipchoge became the first man to ever run a marathon in under two hours in Vienna, though his 1:59.40 is not eligible to stand as an official world record.

The men’s race in Chicago was won by Lawrence Cherono in a thrilling sprint finish, but Mo Farah struggled, only finishing eighth in defence of his title.

The Brit’s time of 2:09.58 is his poorest marathon performance to date.
