Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater has completed his loan move to Premier League strugglers Aston Villa having returned from his spell at Burnley.

The former Leicester City midfielder, who was an integral part of their title winning team alongside fellow Chelsea man N'Golo Kante, joins the Villans until the end of the season.

Drinkwater, who joined Chelsea for £35million in 2017, struggled for game time at Burnley, making just one Premier League appearance, and suffering a spell out of the side through injury following an incident in a Manchester night club.

Villa, who are a point and place above the relegation zone, have brought Drinkwater in to ease the loss of influential midfielder John McGinn who picked up an injury against Southampton before Christmas.

"Hopefully I can hit the ground running," said Drinkwater.

"From a Villa point of view I want the club to stay in the Premier League and personally just to get game time. A clear aim of mine this season has been to play. I am looking forward to the challenge."

Villa boss Dean Smith said: “Danny was a key member of Leicester City’s title winning team and has represented England so he is a vastly experienced player.

“He will strengthen our squad significantly.”
