Argentina fail to find the target

13 April 2012

Argentina could not score in two hours of competitive action against Japanese club sides today, five days before their opening group game against Nigeria.

Argentina's probable team for Sunday's Group F match in Ibaraki were held 0-0 in an hour-long match with J-League side Tokyo FC.

Earlier, a second-string side, with Gabriel Batistuta up front and four players from Argentina's Under-20 team making up the numbers, lost 1-0 against Vegalta Sendai. This was the clearest sign coach Marcelo Bielsa has given that Hernan Crespo will start as firstchoice striker.

Rangers striker Claudio Caniggia was not risked in either match as he has a knee injury and is unlikely to play on Sunday. He said: "I've suffered a setback. It will be very difficult for me to be available by the weekend."

Bielsa will now be hoping Caniggia is ready to play against England on Friday week.
