Tottenham forward Heung-min Son was sent off and left the pitch in tears after Everton's Andre Gomes suffered a horrific injury.

Son, chasing back down the left flank, caught the Portuguese with a late tackle from behind and the momentum sent Gomes hurtling into Serge Aurier.

It was quickly apparent that the 27-year-old was in serious trouble after appearing to sustain a horrendous leg injury, with players swiftly calling for medical attention.

Son, after realising the true extent of what his challenge had caused, walked away in tears and looked utterly distraught with several players seen shaking their heads in disbelief.

After initially appearing to pull the yellow card out of his pocket, Martin Atkinson brandished the red card to the Tottenham forward and he headed down the tunnel.

After a lengthy delay, Gomes was stretchered off by several medical staff members with an ambulance waiting to take him to a nearby hospital.

Aurier was then booed as he was taken off towards the end of the game, being replaced by Juan Foyth, after appearing to be affected by what he had witnessed.

Such was the length of the delay, with additional VAR incidents also causing long stoppages, 12 minutes were added on after the 90 minutes were up.

Following the stoppage while Gomes was treated, and earlier delays for VAR, 12 minutes of added time was played.

Everton would find the equaliser with substitute Cenk Tosun heading home, and the match finished 1-1.

Everton manager Marco Silva provided an update to Sky Sports after the match

"He went to the hospital," he said. "Our medical staff will control everything, they will give more information. We wait a bit more.

"It's a bad moment for us as a group, as a team. When something like happens it's more important than football. But we stayed together and showed our spirit after that moment.

"I didn't see the incident, I just saw him lying there. I cannot say anything about the tackle because I did not see it."

Speaking after the match, Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli revealed how Son was in tears in the dressing room.

"[I] Didn’t want to look too much at what happened," Alli told Sky Sports. "I want to send best wishes.

"Son is devastated and in tears. It’s not his fault. Son is one of nicest people you’ve ever met. He can’t even lift his head up, he’s crying so much."

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino revealed that Everton captain Seasmus Coleman tried to comfort Son after the game .

Coleman was sidelined for a year after suffering a similarly-horrific double-fracture of his lower leg in March 2017, making his compassion towards Son even more heartfelt.

"The players from Everton were fantastic,” said Pochettino. “The captain came to the dressing room to console Son.

"I want to say thank you to the players and Coleman, who came in on behalf of the squad of Everton."
