Allen fast becoming a legend in his own lunchbox

Brentford's hunger to stay in the Second Division will be put to the test following the scrapping of meals in the players' canteen.

Martin Allen has ordered his squad to bring in packed lunches in a bid to save money at the cash-strapped club.

The 38-year-old manager has already set an example by arriving at their Tolworth training ground carrying an England lunchbox, complete with natty shoulder strap. His mini-hamper consisted of homemade sandwiches, a piece of fruit and a drink - and the players are expected to adopt a similar nutritional policy.

Allen said: "All food at the training ground has been cancelled. The players now bring in their own.

"I took my packed lunch in my England lunchbox because everyone supports their country. If they do a Brentford lunchbox, I will of course use that instead. The players did all laugh when they saw the shoulder strap, though."

Allen is determined to save as much money as possible on administrative costs such as food, hotels and travel in order to boost investment in the team. Brentford are £7million in debt and rely on supporters' donations to stay in business.

Having been taught the importance of budgetary control by Barnet chairman Tony Kleanthous, Allen has taken charge of all squad-related outgoings at Griffin Park. Not one football, plastic cone or training strip is bought without his consent.

He said: "On the first day I arrived I made it clear that nothing is to be purchased without my permission.

"If you add all the bits and pieces up, it may mean the difference between being able to bring in a loan player or not next season.

"The more money we have to spend on players' wages, the better the chance we have of being successful. Every ha'penny we can save is important."

Allen's methods have so far paid dividends with Brentford unbeaten in six matches. Victory over Wycombe on Saturday would put them in a strong position to avoid relegation.
