Ainslie on course for gold

13 April 2012

Ben Ainslie is on course for a gold medal to add to the one he won in Sydney.

He is guaranteed at least a silver medal after his fourth win in 10 races in the Finn class.

And Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield could make it a hat-trick of British sailing golds as they have also clinched at least silver in the men's 470, despite losing their lead after today's two races.

Ainslie finished second in today's first race, his sixth top-three finish in nine, before leading from start to finish in the competition's penultimate race.

Ainslie holds a 14-point lead over second-placed Spaniard Rafael Trujillo, who finished fourth in race 10.

He should clinch his second successive Olympic gold, after victory in the Laser in Sydney, in the final race on Saturday.

Rodgers and Glanfield are sure to finish in the top two of the 470, taking an unassailable 24-point lead over third-placed Sweden into Saturday's final race.

They led by 10 points after today's first race, in which they finished 10th, but in the second they trailed in 19th, their worst result so far.

Now they need a better finish than American rivals Paul Foerster and Kevin Burnham, who lead them by two points, in race 11.

"We are really pleased to have the silver," Rogers told BBC Sport.

"If Paul (Foerster) tries to take us out to the back of the fleet, then at least we have already got a medal.

"We didn't sail that well today but are going to come out all guns blazing on Saturday and take them on for gold."

Glanfield added: "It really will be gloves off for the gold medal. They are going to come at us hard."

Paul Goodison is only a point outside the medals in fourth place in the Laser after winning race seven today.

And there is still an outside chance of a medal for women's 470 pair Christina Bassadone and Katherine Hopson, who finished second in their ninth race to claim sixth place overall.
