Addicks insist Rommedahl will stay at Valley

14 April 2012

Charlton maintain Denmark winger Dennis Rommedahl is not about to leave The Valley after just one season.

The 26-year-old endured a difficult first campaign in English football following his £2million switch to south-east London last July, struggling to hold down a regular place in Alan Curbishley's side after some inconsistent displays.

Rommedahl had been training with his old club in Holland, but, the player insisted, only as part of preparations for Denmark's recent World Cup qualifiers rather than seeking out a return move.

Following the £3million capture of England Under-21 striker Darren Bent from Ipswich last week, Charlton chairman Richard Murray admits he expects some of the current squad to be sold as well as more new talent coming in - but that Rommedahl would not be one of the men to leave The Valley.

"I think Dennis has been linked with PSV because he was training before an international match," said Murray.

"I think what we've got to remember with Dennis is that he's shown glimpses of his form this year and very often players that come from abroad do take a year to settle, so maybe we'll see a better Dennis Rommedahl next year. "I expect him to be here."

The Charlton chairman, though, revealed: "I think there is a chance of some players being sold. "We like to run a squad of at least 24 senior players and I think if we get five signings in, one or two of our players will realise they've gone down the pecking order and they'll probably ask to go - and we'll let them."

Charlton are likely to make some more moves in the transfer market over the next few weeks as Curbishley seeks to build a squad capable of "staying the course" in the Barclays Premiership after his team secured just one victory from their final 14 league games to drop back from European contention and finish in 11th place.

The Addicks boss is keen to get all of his men in place before the start of pre-season training on July 4, and Murray commented: "We never mention our transfer budget to the media, but there is money available to Alan and I think everybody knows that we like to spend it wisely and we tend not to be linked with players until we've actually done the deal.

"It's very important that we have all the players in for pre-season training, so we are under a bit of pressure."

"Last year a number of players didn't arrive until a week before the start of the season and that's too late," Murray added on the club's official website, www.cafc.co.uk.

Reports have linked striker Francis Jeffers, who arrived from Arsenal for £2.6million last summer but failed to impress, with a switch back to the north-west at newly-promoted Wigan, while unsettled midfielder Jason Euell and veteran defender Mark Fish are two others who could look to continue their career elsewhere next season.

Charlton are said to be about to move for Liverpool's Champions League winner Vladimir Smicer, but Murray insisted: "It's news to me."

He added: "I'm not sure whether the managers have been talking. I am responsible for all transfers coming in and out of the club, so eventually it has to come across my desk. I know of the player, but I haven't had any contact."
