He's been a Sixties mod, a Seventies rocker and even a "deaf, dumb and blind kid" in Tommy. But this is the first time Roger Daltrey has become a black woman. The Who frontman guest stars in hit US crime drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, to be screened on Five this month.

He plays Las Vegas mobster Mikey Dunn, who dons elaborate disguises to kill his former associates. A cast of Daltrey's head was taken, from which latex moulds were made. The masks were glued on his face and blended in with make-up.

The whole experience was surreal, says Daltrey, 63. "I came off stage in Seattle on a Thursday night [after a Who gig] and was here on the Friday shooting it," he tells Radio Times.

"It's great fun when you're on the set, but I think I'll stick with the band."

One disguise, as a fisherman, almost resulted in Daltrey being thrown off set. CSI executive producer Doug Petrie said: "I thought he was a homeless guy."

CSI bosses, who adopted The Who's Who Are You? as the theme tune, have been keen to sign Daltrey since the show started seven years ago.

"My agent asked me, 'How would you like to do CSI?'" said Daltrey.

"How could I refuse? It felt like an honour."

The full feature appears in Radio Times, out tomorrow.
