Billionaires Sir Alan Sugar and Sir Richard Branson are to host rival versions of a hit American TV reality show.

The rights of Donald Trump's The Apprentice have been sold to BBC2 for screening in January. The US version saw contestants compete for a top job with Trump, who removed one a week with the catchphrase "You're fired."

Sir Alan, who made his fortune with electronics giant Amstrad, will present the British version of The Apprentice, offering the winner a six-figure salary running one of his companies. He is doing the job for nothing, saying: "I have made more money than I will spend in my lifetime."

Meanwhile, Virgin boss Sir Richard hosts The Billionaire: Branson's Big Adventure. He is expected to offer a senior position in his empire after eliminating contestants through stunts like white-water rafting and parachuting.
