This year's historic Tony Awards saw significant wins despite almost being postponed due to the ongoing writers’ strike.

The night also witnessed history with two non-binary Tony Award winners. J Harrison Ghee won best actor in leading role in a musical for Some Like It Hot, while Alex Newell earned the award for best featured actor for their part in Shucked.

Jodie Comer once again impressed judges with her acting skills, this time for her one-woman Broadway show Prime Facie.

This year's ceremony was almost postponed, but a deal on May 15 ensured that the night would not be picketed as long as it was unscripted.

Despite the deal, the Writers Guild of America reportedly continued to ask nominated members not to attend.

The strike prevented Lin-Manuel Miranda from continuing to create the song he had been commissioned to write for the event, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Broadway’s biggest night of the year was hosted by Ariana DeBose, who opened the show referencing the strike with a performance where she flipped through empty pages in a binder labelled “script” in a dressing room.

“We don’t have a script you guys. I am live and unscripted. You’re welcome.”
