Organisers of tonight's Brit Awards are hoping troubled singer Pete Doherty will stay away from the glittering ceremony and instead choose to go into rehab in a bid to rebuild his life for girlfriend Kate Moss.

Doherty is on the guest list for the awards. He is due to attend a drug rehabilitation centre today and other bail conditions require him to observe a 10pm-7am curfew. But Doherty's erratic behaviour in recent months has made him hard to predict.

He said the thought of Moss kept him going while he spent six nights in Pentonville Prison.

Doherty was among murderers and paedophiles in the prison's A wing and confessed he thought he was "going to die" - but says he made it because of Moss.

The 25-year-old singer has been charged with blackmail and robbery following an incident with film-maker Max Carlish at the Rookery Hotel in Clerkenwell. Speaking about the night of the incident, Doherty, who had a room in the hotel, said: "One minute I'm waiting for Kate to arrive to join me in the Jacuzzi for a romantic evening. The next thing I can remember is doing cold turkey in a vomit-filled cell"

Doherty, who was released when his record label put up £100,000 in cash to complete his £150,000 bail, added: "I'm going to stay clean. I'm determined to do it for Kate and my mum, the two women I love."

A £1 million stage has been built for the 25th Brits at the Earls Court arena, where the cream of British music talent will perform and compete for accolades.

It has been designed by the world-renowned rock set creator, Briton Mark Fisher, who has worked for the Rolling Stones, U2 and Peter Gabriel.

The show promises live acts by Robbie Williams, the Scissor Sisters, Jamelia, Daniel and Natasha Bedingfield, Joss Stone, Keane, Gwen Stefani, Franz Ferdinand and Bob Geldof.
