The entertainment industry has also joined the effort to raise money for aid.

West End shows, including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Mamma Mia, We Will Rock You and The Woman In White, have all contributed.

Audiences for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang have given £33,000, up to £4,000 from each show.

Hollywood actress Sandra Bullock donated $1million (about £520,000) to the American Red Cross in the region.

She gave the same amount after the September 11 attacks.

Leonardo DiCaprio has pledged a "sizable" contribution to Unicef. This will be targeted in the devastated areas of Thailand where his hit movie The Beach was filmed five years ago, said a spokesman for the actor.

In India, a religious leader has pledged more than many aid groups.

Mata Amritanandamayi, a maternal figure who uses hugs as a gesture of blessing, promised over £10million to build homes for victims in India.

The United Nations will hold a meeting of governments next week to discuss aid pledges.
