Simon Cowell's mother thinks he got engaged too quickly.

The music mogul's mother Julie Cowell has revealed her son and his fiancee Mezhgan Hussainy - who he got engaged to in March - are currently having a "break" from each other with the make-up artist going to the US to visit her family while Simon films the UK version of his pop star search show 'The X Factor'.

The 85 year old believes Simon may have rushed into things too soon with Mezhgan.

She told the Mail on Sunday: "I think [the engagement] was too quick. This might give them the break they need to think it through. Marriage is a very, very big step.

"It's a break at the moment. The problem with Simon is that he works so hard.

"She's gone to America which, in a way, is a good thing because of Simon's work. At the moment it isn't a good idea for her to be here.

"She doesn't know many people in London. If you are Simon's girlfriend, let's be honest about this, you are not going to see very much of him. It's very difficult for a girl to accept that.

"He doesn't want anyone sitting in his dressing room when he's working. Sometimes these girls want to be there too much."

Despite Julie's comments, a spokesperson insists Simon, 51, and Mezghan, 37, are "very much together" and Mezghan will return to the UK in the next few weeks.

Simon dated a string of beauties, including Sinitta, Terri Seymour and Jackie St Claire before getting engaged to Mezghan.

He is still close with most of his ex-girlfriends and this summer he and Mezghan took both Sinitta and Jackie on a £280,000 cruise after they publicly fell out.

The trip saw them cruise around the island of Corsica for two weeks.
