A secret garden tucked away behind one of London's busiest shopping streets will open its gates to the public for one day only this weekend.

This oasis, hidden behind the Convent of the Assumption in Kensington, is one of more than 70 going on show as part of London Garden Squares Day this Sunday.

The garden, which dates back to 1766, is tended by 62-year-old Sister Muriel Rowley, and features mulberry, plane and fruit trees, a Lourdes-style grotto and rabbits, goldfish and guinea pigs.

Sister Rowley, who has lived at the convent for 30 years, said: "In developing the garden my principal aim has been to combine an area of tranquillity where people can pause for thought, with an interesting layout of common and unusual shrubs and flowers."

Visitors to the garden, which will be open from 2pm to 5pm, can enjoy tea and buns from a stall as they wander round, though those after something stronger might opt to have a look round Gloucester Square Gardens in W2, where they can enjoy a glass of Pimm's at the same time.

Other usually "secret" gardens opening to the public on Sunday include Westminster Abbey's College Gardens, which date back to the 14th century, and the Dean's Yard.

Day tickets for admittance to all participating squares cost £5. For further information phone 0870 333 1183.
