NSYNC are officially back after making a surprise appearance at the MTV VMAs last week. The band have now announced that they are releasing their first new song in more than 20 years.

Justin Timberlake has issued an update with a behind-the-scenes video of the bandmates back together again in the studio for the song’s recording.

“So many stars aligned,” Timberlake says in the video to his bandmates. “That’s why I hit y’all, I was like, ‘Hey, something came up.’ If we do this song, it’s a love letter to our fans. I would be honored to have the group on this song.”

The five-piece band includes Timberlake, Chris Kirkpatrick, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone and Lance Bass.

The track, titled Better Place, features in the new Trolls Band Together trailer and is set to be released on Friday, September 29.

The new single was also teased by the American boyband on Wednesday (September 13) in a social media video where the group lip-synced a scene from Friends while standing in front of a blue screen.

Impersonating sitcom character Joey Tribbiani, Timberlake, 42, mouthed: “Do you know something?” to which his bandmate Kirkpatrick, 51, mimed: “I might know something.”

Chasez, 47, then lip-synced: “I might know something, too.”

Bass, 44, then added: “What’s the thing you know?” to which Timberlake said: “Oh no, I can’t tell you until you tell me what you know.”

The Girlfriend hitmakers then collectively shrugged before they left the studio.

NSYNC delighted fans when they reunited for the first time in 10 years to present Taylor Swift with the Best Pop Video award at Tuesday night’s MTV VMAs.

Pop superstar Taylor Swift questioned the former boyband on their future music plans as they reunited to present her with the honour.

After frontman Timberlake announced the “unstoppable” Swift had won the first award of the night for Anti-Hero, Bass handed her a friendship bracelet as he congratulated her on the win.

In her acceptance speech, she pointed at the group and then at her award, saying: “I am not doing well pivoting from this, to this.”

She continued: “I had your dolls. Are you doing something? What’s going to happen now?

“They’re going to do something and I need to know what it is. You’re pop personified, so to receive this from your golden pop hands, really, it’s too much.”

The chart-topping boyband formed in 1995 and last recorded new material in 2002, but they did reunite for a one-off performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards.
