Matthew McConaughey’s brand new film Sea of Trees made less than $3000 in the first few days of its release.

The Gus Van Sant-directed film, which co-stars Naomi Watts, raked in just $2730 during its first week in US cinemas.

Having cost an impressed £25 million to make, it seems that film fans failed to flock to cinemas when it opened last week.

Set in the Aokigahara forest in Japan, McConaughey stars as a businessman who plans to take his own life and meets another man who is planning to do the same.

The film received generally negative reviews when it screened in competition at the Cannes Film Festival and the cast have done little promotion since.

Van Sant’s new film is the latest in a spate of projects that have under-performed at the box office, thanks to poor reviews and simultaneous on-demand releases.

Emma Watson’s new film The Colony bombed during opening weekend back in July, making just £47 at the UK box office during its opening weekend.

Directed by Jeff Renfroe, the film was also released at the same time on video on demand, contributing to the abysmal cinema takings.

Al Pacino’s latest film Misconduct suffered a similar fate at the UK box office in June, making just £97 in its opening week.

The Shintaro Shimosawa-directed film only opened in five cinemas nationwide despite the starry cast, which included Anthony Hopkins.

Keanu Reeves’ new film Exposed also made a measly £88 when it opened in cinemas back in March.
