An eatable exhibition

You can think, sleep and eat art in Hoxton these days, so it's not much of a surprise someone's had the bright idea of creating a literally edible exhibition.

One of London's oldest bakeries, situated in the East End's art epicentre, has been converted into a gallery with an unusual photographic and sound installation. Stephen Gill and Laure Prouvost have taken photographs in and around Anderson's Bakery and imprinted the high-quality images on to icing sheets that have then been set in cakes using food colourings as ink. The images are accompanied by a sound piece in which Prouvost narrates the story of the bakery and describes the images through the viewpoint of an imaginary character.

So what's behind the idea? Hoxton residents themselves, Gill and Prouvost are regular Anderson's customers. 'We buy bread there all the time and we just thought it was a nice, big space,' Prouvost says. 'But it took the bakery some persuading.'

The two artists are used to collaborating on unusual projects. Last year they went to New York and asked random passers-by in the street to do strange and unusual poses for the camera. They then asked them to relax into a 'natural' pose. The results were telling and amusing.

For the current exhibition, the artists have created 18 images. If you'd like one of the cakes containing them, they can be specially made to order by contacting Anderson's (Tel: 020 7729 0607). But it would seem a shame to actually eat them.
