James McAvoy has described the prospect of becoming a father as "amazing" and "psychedelic".

The 30-year-old actor was speaking at the London premiere of his new movie, The Last Station, a Tolstoy biopic which also stars his pregnant wife Anne-Marie Duff.

Duff, 39, refused to comment on the pregnancy, announced shortly before last night's premiere, but when her husband was asked how he felt, he said: "Amazing. Psychedelic. Excellent."

Premiere people: James McAvoy, Anne-Marie Duff and Dame Helen Mirren at the Curzon Mayfair. Dame Helen said McAvoy and Duff would make great parents

Asked if he would prefer a boy or a girl he replied: "Don't know. Don't care."

The couple were joined on the red carpet at the Curzon in Mayfair by co-star Dame Helen Mirren, who said: "I tell you what - that baby will have the most beautiful lullabies sung to it. Anne-Marie and James both have beautiful singing voices."

She added: "It's great. James is a new friend, Anne-Marie is an old friend. I did a play with Anne-Marie quite a few years ago and understood right there and then what a great actress she is.

Dazzling: Mirren wowed fans in a purple Lindka Cierach dress

"I met James just on this film and quietly fell in love with him, so it couldn't be better. You just can't believe how happy they are together. They are so grounded."

Dame Helen dismissed rumours she would be working on a medieval action film directed by Quentin Tarantino.

She added: "It's the first I've heard of it and I think it would be the first Quentin Tarantino will have heard of it. And I was only with him two days ago."
