Pick of the night

An Evening With Randy Newman
7.30pm, Barbican Hall, Silk Street, EC1. £18.45-£30. Tube: Barbican, Moorgate.
One of America's most talented and original songwriters, Newman nods more to Broadway than pop. Singing in character - from the point of view of rednecks, cowards and cuckolds - gives his musically adept songs humour, a satirical edge and a complexity of message that breaks the confessional singer-songwriter mould. A great chance to see him performing his best work in a rare solo setting. Returns only.
