Home Alone fans have been left feeling “betrayed” after finding out a game changing fact about the hit festive film.

The 1990 Christmas comedy follows Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, as he takes on hapless crime duo Harry and Marv, aka the Wet Bandits, in a bid to stop them from burgling his house after his family fly to Paris and forget to take him with them.

McCallister plays scenes from a film called Angels With Filthy Souls in a bid to deter the double act – but it turns out the film is fake.

Seth Rogen uncovered the truth on Twitter, telling his followers: “My entire childhood, I thought the old timey movie that Kevin watches in Home Alone (Angels With Filthy Souls) was actually an old movie.”

Fans were left in shock, with many begging to know if Rogen’s tweet was a joke, while Culkin also revealed he too spent his childhood believing Angels With Filthy Souls was a genuine gangster flick.

One user tweeted: “Wow. I didn't know until just now. This changes everything!”

Another posted: “I only found out the truth a few weeks ago. I don’t know whether I feel naive or betrayed.”

A third wrote: “Why did you just ruin Christmas.”

Others called for a “crowdfunding campaign to MAKE it a real movie” while others begged Macaulay Culkin to star “in a real production of Angels With Filthy Souls so Home Alone can be ultra meta”.

The black and white 'film' was famous for the line “Keep the change ya filthy animal” and featured the characters Johnny and Snakes.

Culkin recently reprised his role as a grown-up McCallister in a Home Alone-inspired Google advert.

He recreated famous scenes, including telling the pizza delivery guy to “keep the change you filthy animal” and setting traps for hapless crime duo Harry and Marv.
