Paul Gascoigne has hurt his back after indulging in a gruelling dance training regime inspired by Olympic iceskaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean - with best pal Jimmy 'Five Bellies' Gardner.

The former England footballer claims the injury was caused after the pair got on the rink to prepare for his part in Strictly Ice Dancing - an ice-skating Christmas special for BBC1's Strictly Come Dancing programme.

Gazza, 37, said: 'I'm gutted. I've been training with Jimmy Five Bellies and we kept arguing over who would be Torvill and who would be Dean. In trying to lift him, I fell and was crushed to the ice.

Unlike Torvill, he's 16 stone (101kg).' He will be replaced by another former England star, goalkeeper David Seaman. The 41-year-old joked: 'I always seem to be stepping in to help Gazza.' Seaman will join Liberty X's Jessica Taylor and EastEnders actress Scarlett Johnson on Boxing Day.
