Demi Moore is in no hurry to retire the iconic sex-symbol image she gained as a young actress despite approaching 60.

The Ghost star, who turns the milestone age in November, has criticised the societal notion that once a woman becomes middle-aged she should ditch the sexy for frumpy and resign to being old.

Moore shared her thoughts on ageing while discussing the inspiration behind her latest collection for swimwear brand Andie, Demi Moore x Andie, which launched on July 7.

"It’s changing this idea that women become less desirable as we get older,” she said.

"We don’t want to look matronly or not feel sexy.

“You hit 59 and you're already thinking, ‘Well, I'm going to be 60,’”

"It feels very liberating,” she added to People magazine.

“When I think of my grandmother at 60, she in a way seemed to be already resigned to being old. But I feel, in so many ways, more alive and present than ever."

Moore, who has three children, daughters Rumer, 33, Scout, 31, and Tallulah, 28, from her marriage to actor Bruce Willis, 67, added that it doesn't mean that older women need to always dress in skimpy, flesh-flashing outfits to be sexy.

"When I’m in Idaho, it’s generally overalls all day, every day," she explained. "That’s as much me as wearing a super-gorgeous red carpet gown or a chic designer outfit front row at fashion week.”

The star has modeled pieces from her collection for the publication and in a video on Instagram.

She showed off her enviable figure as she posed in black and white swimsuits as well as a patterned version in various luxury locations including a yacht and stunning swimming pool.

In one of the images she is seen holding her petite dog named Pilaf, and also on the balcony of a building.

‘BTS of my new collection with @andieswim! So much fun shooting with the Andie team and @drewescriva. (And a cameo by Pilaf [dog emoji],’ she captioned the clip on her Instagram page.

The star, who is currently dating millionaire chef and restaurateur Daniel Humm, 46, also said that constant exercising and eating only when she is hungry is how she stays in shape.

The star, who was also previously married to actor Ashton Kutcher, who is fifteen years her junior, sparked controversy over her appearance last year.

Moore’s particularly youtful appearance during her stint on the catwalk during Paris Fashion Week appearance, led to speculation across social media that she had cosmetic surgery.

While she didn't address the rumours, she previously gave her thught about plastic surgery.

She told Elle magazine in a 2010 interview: "I have had something done but it's not on my face," she told Elle magazine.

"It feels like school-yard name-calling a lot of the time. It hurts.

"You know what? Maybe one day I’ll go under the knife.

"It just irritates me that people are constantly saying how much I’ve spent on plastic surgery."
