The death of actor David Gail is being investigated as a “possible drug overdose”, according to reports.

Law enforcement sources told TMZ no foul play is suspected in the death of the former Beverly Hills, 90210 star. Police are said to be waiting on toxicology tests to determine an official cause of death.

Police suspect an overdose may have caused his death, the publication reported.

Gail was best known for his work on hit nineties show Beverly Hills, 90210, where he played Stuart Carson, the one-time fiancé of Shannen Doherty’s Brenda Walsh.

He was also known for playing Dr Joe Scanlon in more than 200 episodes of General Hospital spin-off Port Charles.

His sister, Katie Colmenares, confirmed the news on Instagram on Friday in a tribute, but did not reveal the cause of death.

She wrote alongside a snap of them embracing each other. “There’s barely been even a day in my life when you were not with me by my side, always my wingman, always my best friend ready to face anything and anyone with me.

“The bears will never be the same but I will hold you so tight every day in my heart you gorgeous loving amazing fierce human being missing you every second of every day forever there will never be another [broken heart emojis] (sic)”

His passing was first made public when Pete Ferreiro, the host of the Beverly Hills 90210 Show podcast, shared some clips of the actor’s appearances on his show.

The podcast’s account read: “In memory of David Gail. Here are a few stories he shared when he joined the podcast.”

Condolences poured in with memories of the actor. ‘We loved David so much,’ wrote Sheri Sussman of Spiral Gate Productions. "He was one of the good guys in life."

"Sending love to you and your family and am heartbroken he was the most loyal, supportive friend. I miss him already."

"So sad tragic news loved him as Stuart," wrote a fan. "So sad forever Stuart Carson rip," said another.

Gail also starred in Growing Pains, Murder She Wrote, and Doogie Howser, MD and E.R. His most recent role was in Blacksad: Under the Skin, an adventure game in which he voiced the character of Sam.
