She once famously posed in the 'I'd rather go naked than wear fur' campaign.

But it seems Cindy Crawford has had a change of heart, becoming a model for the mink coat giant Blackglama.

The move has angered animals rights groups.

The mother-of-two follows in the footsteps of Bette Davis, Marlene Dietrich, Lauren Bacall, Rita Hayworth and Gisele Bundchen by working for the company.

Edward Brennan, spokesman for Blackglama's marketing team American Legend, said Miss Crawford modelled five coats for its forthcoming campaign.

'She can have any one she wants,' he told Women's Wear Daily magazine. 'I hope she took all five.' Miss Crawford, 38, and fellow supermodel Naomi Campbell became spokesmen for the animal rights group PETA in the 1990s.

But fur has experienced an image change in recent years and Miss Campbell has regularly modelled it on the catwalks.

A PETA insider said: 'We cannot believe Cindy has changed her views about fur so radically in the space of ten years.

'The fur industry is just as barbaric as it was back then but she sees nothing wrong with advertising it. It's sad.'

Earlier this year, top designer Jasper Conran received threatening letters from animal rights campaigners angry that he was using real fur.
