It correctly predicted Donald Trump’s presidency, Lady Gaga’s Superbowl performance and the outbreak of Ebola and now it seems that The Simpsons could have the World Cup final pegged too.

Fans of the long-running cartoon think that it may have predicted which two countries will battle it out in the 2018 final way back in 1997.

If Matt Groening’s show is to be believed, it will be Mexico and Portugal going head-to-head in just a few weeks to be crowned winner of the tournament.

An episode, which aired over 20 years ago, features a ‘soccer’ tournament “to determine which nation is the greatest on earth, Mexico or Portugal?”

Viewers were quick to notice the similarities (although the match is set in Springfield not Russia) and began getting very excited on social media.

“If the Simpsons really predict Mexico vs Portugal, I will question this very reality that we live in,” one person wrote on Twitter

“The Simpson's predicted Mexico and Portugal to make it to the finals of the #WorldCup many of the simpsons predictions have came true so only time will tell #POR #Mex,” posted another.

Others were more sceptical, with one person writing: “Honestly does the simpsons predict stuff or is there just a lot of f****** simpsons episodes?”

Portuguese newspaper Eco took it even further, writing: “Although there is no clear indication of what year the match takes places in, one detail has led viewers to believe that it's the 2018 World Cup final.

"There seems to be a reference to the scandal that recently plagued the Mexican team who allegedly partied with several women before the beginning of the tournament."

The show might still be right, as Portugal are already through to the next stage after finishing second in Group B, while Mexico are currently top of Group F.

Watch this space and prepare to be completely amazed… or not.
