A petition has been launched calling for film website Rotten Tomatoes to be shut down following a spate of negative Suicide Squad reviews.

The David Ayer directed film, starring Margot Robbie and Will Smith, was panned by critics and given a lowly 30 per cent rating by the website which aggregates what other people have said about the film.

The change.org petition was launched by a group of angry DC fans who complained that the negative reviews of Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad “affect people's opinion even if it's a really great movie”.

More than 17,000 people have thrown their support behind the cause which "definitely won't shut down the site" but aims to "deliver a message to the critics that there is a lot of people [that] disagree with their reviews".

Critics have accused the film of being "messy" while others panned it for “appalling sexism” and “hideously timed gun worship”.

Cara Delevingne, who plays Enchantress, responded to the negativity at the European premiere and described the critics as “absolutely horrific”.

“They're really, really horrible,” she said. “You know, I just don't think they like superhero movies.

“This movie isn’t perfect but it’s a wonderful film and we all worked really hard.

Ayer defended the film on Twitter where he responded to the critics with a quote from Emillio Zappata which translates as: “I’d prefer to die standing, than to live always on my knees.”

He added: “Zapata quote is my way of saying I love the movie and believe in it. Made it for the fans. Best experience of my life.”

Suicide Squad follows a group of superhuman inmates who are used by a secret government agency to complete illegal tasks in exchange for freedom.

Will Smith (Deadshot), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag), Karen Fukuhara (Katana), Jay Hernandez (Diablo) and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Killer Croc) are among the star studded cast.

Suicide Squad is set for UK cinema release on August 5.
