Stormzy’s girlfriend Maya Jama has jumped to his defence, hailing him an “icon” after his Glastonbury headline set was heavily criticised.

The grime MC was unveiled as the first confirmed act for next year’s festival which will see him takeover the Pyramid Stage on the Friday night.

But the news divided festival goers who claimed he is not worthy of headlining the famous event with only one album to his name.

Jama tweeted her excitement at the news as she hyped up her other half.

“Ohhh okkk casual yeah..Just in a relationship with an actual icon, no big deal,” she posted.

She also appeared to hit out at fuming festival fans, tweeting: “I’d be mad too if I was a negative Nancy like you.”

Jama, who has been dating the Big For Your Boots star for three years, vowed to watch her boyfriend's set “in the middle with a flag”.

Stormzy’s involvement was teased out with a series of posters which popped up close to the festival site in Worthy Farm, and another in the window of an Oxfam shop in Streatham, London.

Stormzy, real name Michael Omari, will be the first grime MC to headline the famous festival a year on from his BRIT award winning album Gang Signs and Prayers.

He previously performed on the Other Stage in 2017.

Other acts will be confirmed in the coming months, with Sir Paul McCartney, Madonna and Kylie Minogue's names being bandied about.

Tickets for Glastonbury sold out within 32 minutes last month, with re-sale up for grabs in April.
