The force was not strong with one angry Star Wars fan who is calling for The Last Jedi to be excluded from the canon.

The Rian Johnson directed instalment was praised by critics, but has been widely panned by die-hard fans of the epic sci-fi franchise.

One disgruntled fan, who goes by the name Henry Walsh, has launched a petition in a bid to make the Walt Disney Company “push back Episode IX and re-make Episode VIII properly”.

He branded the latest film a “travesty” which he claims has “destroyed the very reasons most of us, as fans, liked Star Wars”.

The petition, which has amassed 29,997 signatures, reads: “Star Wars has long been a story about two things, the Jedi and Luke Skywalker.

“After over 260 novels where we could follow the adventures of that great hero you, the Walt Disney Company decided to strike all of that from the official canon and wiped out three decades of lore.

“We were excited to see Episode VII to see how our heroes lives turned out since you took away what we knew.

“Episode VIII was a travesty. It completely destroyed the legacy of Luke Skywalker and the Jedi.”

Offering a solution, Walsh wrote: “This can be fixed. Just as you wiped out 30 years of stories, we ask you to wipe out one more, the Last Jedi. Remove it from canon, push back Episode IX and re-make Episode VIII properly to redeem Luke Skywalker's legacy, integrity, and character.”

According to Rotten Tomatoes, The Last Jedi earned an audience score of only 56 per cent compared to the 88 per cent garnered by The Force Awakens.
