Mark Hamill has shot down reports that he hinted at the fate of his Star Wars alter ego Luke Skywalker.

Hamill, 64, sent the rumour mill into overdrive when he appeared to suggest that Episode VIII would be his last outing as the Jedi Master.

The actor made the comment during an interview with The Kinks’ Ray Davies at a Big Issue event.

Speaking to the audience he said: “I finish Episode VIII, and then I’m out of work.”

But Hamill has dismissed reports that his comment spells the end for Skywalker, insisting he meant he would be out of work because Episode VIII is close to being finished.

Clarifying his comment he tweeted: “I meant "out of work" because #Ep8 is wrapping soon, OK?

“#DontOverThinkEVERYTHING #ParsingHamill #WaitForVIII.”

Hamill will return as Skywalker in Episode VIII after enjoying a minimal role in The Force Awakens.

Rumours have circulated that he will take part in an epic battle with Rey (Daisy Ridley) against Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

Star Wars: Episode 8 is slated for UK cinema release on December 15, 2017.
