Sir Terry Wogan and Sir Cliff Richard look set to battle it out for this year’s Christmas number one spot.

Fans of the late broadcaster are campaigning to get his version of The Floral Dance to the top spot, following his death at the beginning of the year.

Originally released by Sir Terry back in 1978, the single only managed to reach number 21 in the charts at the time

Started on Facebook, the ‘#Terry4No1’ campaign currently has over 26,000 likes and urges fans to download the re-released single on December 16.

The Facebook page reads: “In tribute to Sir Terry, let's have The Floral Dance as this year's official UK Christmas No.1 but we need YOUR help!”

But Sir Terry’s single has some stiff competition from Sir Cliff, who is releasing a new festive mix of single It’s Better To Dream.

Sir Cliff has hit the Christmas top spot twice in the past, with Mistletoe and Wine in 1988 and Saviour’s Day in 1990.

Other contenders for the most coveted chart position of the year include the annual X Factor winner’s single as well as new songs by Kylie Minogue and Gareth Malone.

James Corden is also in the running with the song he recorded for this year’s Sainsbury’s advert, which proved popular with viewers.

Veteran broadcaster and radio DJ Sir Terry passed away in January this year, following a short battle with cancer.
