The British superstar was reportedly fighting back tears as he spoke about the late singer just a few days after his tragic death on Christmas Day, saying that he ‘wished’ he was there.

Opening his series of New Year’s shows in the US on Wednesday evening, Sir Elton performed Don’t Let The Sun Go Down, which the pair released as a duet back in 1991.

“I only wish George was here to sing it with me,” he told the crowd as he introduced the song.

An audience member told Mail Online: “After he sang for George, he turned his back on the audience and was shaking and looked like he was crying. I was in tears and so was everyone around me.

“He received a standing ovation and had to be consoled by a band member before beginning the rest of the show. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.”

Sir Elton was one of a host of stars to tweet their condolences following the shock death of Michael at the age of 53.

“I am in deep shock. I have lost a beloved friend - the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist,” he wrote on Boxing Day.

“My heart goes out to his family, friends and all of his fans. @GeorgeMichael #RIP.”

Sir Elton is expected to perform at Michael’s funeral, which is set to be held in Highgate Cemetery, London.

There is also rumoured to be a memorial concert in the works, with stars including Sir Elton, Mariah Carey and Bob Geldof in talks to perform.
