Sir David Attenborough has received death threats on Twitter after he joked that Donald Trump should be shot.

Sir Attenborough, 90, made the remark during an interview with Radio Times in which he was asked how to deal with the problem of the business tycoon becoming US President-elect.

“We could shoot him,” he replied. “It's not a bad idea.”

The Planet Earth presenter has since become the target of hate online from Trump supporters who were left fuming with his comment.

He was accused of “incitement to murder” with many calling for the FBI to investigate his remark.

One person tweeted: “@FBI you might like to ask Sir David Attenborough why he suggested Donald Trump should be shot.”

Another wrote: “HOW ABOUT WE PUT 2 IN THE BACK YOUR HEAD.”

A third said: “What a sick left wing loon, kill him!!!”

Others called for the veteran broadcaster to be banned from entering the US with one user tweeting: “David Attenborough wants to Shoot' Donald Trump, ban him from the US & inform the secret service.”

It is the second wave of criticism to hit Sir Attenborough in recent weeks.

Earlier this month he was branded an "elite snob" for suggesting British people were not wise enough to vote in the EU Referendum.

He said the decision about the future of the UK should have been left to MPs who could have voted on behalf of the electorate.

Following the comments one Twitter user called him an “Arrogant Lefty T***”, another said he is a “silly old fool” while a third told him to “stick to the animals mate”.
