Selena Gomez has admitted that she was “insecure” and “easily influenced” in her past relationships, but is finally in a “strong headspace”.

The US actress and pop star, 25, described current boyfriend The Weeknd – real name Abel Tesfaye – as her “best friend”, in a new interview.

“I don’t depend on one area of my life to make me happy. It’s really important for me to love and nourish my friends and family and to make sure that I never get influenced by a guy,” she told InStyle magazine.

“I’ve wanted to be in a strong headspace for years, and I really wasn’t. Before, I was so young and easily influenced, and I’d feel insecure.”

Gomez added: “You want someone to add to your life, not to complete you, if that makes sense. I’m lucky because he’s more of a best friend than anything else.”

They made their red carpet debut as a couple at the Met Gala back in May after months of speculation that they had been dating.

Gomez was previously in a relationship with Canadian pop star Justin Bieber, while The Weeknd dated model Bella Hadid.

The Fetish singer pulled out of a series of tour dates last year after struggling to cope with anxiety and depression.

“I went away for 90 days, and it was the best thing that I ever could've done,” she said.

“I had no phone, nothing, and I was scared. But it was amazing, and I learned a lot.”
