Black Panther could make history at next months Oscars after picking up the top gong at the SAG Awards.

The ceremony, which is regarded as a marker for the Academy Awards, honoured the Marvel superhero hit with Best Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture after beating off A Star Is Born, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Crazy Rich Asians. It also picked up Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble.

Chadwick Boseman, who plays the titular character in the Ryan Coogler directed film, received a standing ovation as he gave an impassioned acceptance speech, telling audience members they knew they had “something special that we wanted to give the world”.

He said: “We know what it’s like to be told there’s not a screen for you to be featured on, a stage for you to be featured on.

“We know what it’s like to be the tail, but not the head. We know what it’s like to be beneath, but not above. And that is what we went to work with every day. Because we knew not that we would be around during awards season or that it would make a billion dollars, but we knew that we had something special that we wanted to give the world — that we could be full human beings in the roles that we were playing. That we could create a world that exemplified a world that we wanted to see.”

He finished by teasing a sequel, saying: “I know you can’t have a Black Panther now without a ‘2’ on it.”

But it was a disappointing night for the Brits after Christian Bale lost out on Leading Actor to Bohemian Rhapsody’s Rami Malek for his portrayal of the late Queen legend Freddie Mercury, while The Favourite’s Olivia Colman missed out on Leading Actress to Glenn Close for The Wife.

Richard E Grant also lost out on Supporting Actor to Green Book’s Mahershala Ali, but Emily Blunt triumphed with Supporting Actress for her role in A Quiet Place.

Blunt reduced her husband John Krasinski, who wrote, directed and starred in the horror, to tears as she paid a touching tribute.

“I am going to share this completely with my husband, John Krasinski, because the entire experience of doing this with you has completely pierced my heart directly,” she said.

“You are a stunning filmmaker., I'm so lucky to be with you and to have done this film with you. Thank you for giving me the part. You would have been in major trouble if you hadn't.”
