Sacha Baron Cohen made a fashion faux pas as he arrived in socks and sandals to the Brothers Grimsby premiere in Los Angeles.

Dressed in character as Carl 'Nobby' Butcher, the comedian swigged from a pint and brandished a toy gun as he worked the red carpet in white socks and sliders.

He teamed the outfit with three quarter length denim trousers and an England football shirt.

Cohen – who arrived in a yellow cab – took the opportunity to 'endorse' Donald Trump by wearing a badge of the Republican’s face and a red cap brandishing Trump’s often quoted slogan: “Make America great again”.

Speaking to the crowds he said: "Today I am announcing my endorsement of Donald Trump for president."

The controversial comedian – who was joined by his wife Isla Fisher – also came face-to-face with a few familiar faces including Staines-born Ali-G and a mankini wearing Borat.

Cohen recently reprised Ali-G as he took to the stage at the Academy Awards to present alongside Olivia Wilde.

Speaking about the controversial move, Cohen later exlained how his wife had to help him to smuggle the character into the celebratory bash as organisers had banned him from taking to the stage in character.

“The truth is we actually had to sneak it in because the Oscars sat me down before and said they didn't want me to do anything out of order," he told Good Morning Britain.

“They wanted me to actually present it as myself. But luckily my wife put on the Ali G beard in the disabled toilets so we managed to get away with it.”

Grimsby is in cinemas now.
