Robert Carlyle has hinted that there could be a third Trainspotting film in the works, starring his character Francis Begbie.

The Scottish actor, who has reprised his iconic role for the long-awaited follow-up to the original 1996 film, has teased a third film or a possible spin-off.

Speaking on the red carpet at the premiere of T2 in Edbinburgh on Sunday night, Carlyle said that he had been ‘in talks’ about a return.

“We’ve been talking about that, I am up for doing it,” he said. “So maybe we ain’t seen the end of Begbie just yet.”

Begbie is the lead character in Irvine Welsh’s 2016 book The Blade Artist, which is rumoured to be the focus of the next film.

Speaking about the development of his character, 20 years on from his first outing, Caryle said:

“That is the first time you see maybe there is another side to this guy.

"There is something quite emotional about that. He's capable of feeling something more just rage, so I am pleased that that element of Begbie has been shown.

"And maybe that sets up another film in fact because Irvine Welsh has written The Blade Artist.”

The brand new T2 is based loosely on Welsh’s Porno, but has been updated to fit in with the timeframe of the follow-up film.

Directed by Danny Boyle reportedly wanted to wait at least two decades to bring back the much-loved characters.
