Meryl Streep may have missed out on an award – but she became an Oscar’s meme after viewers compared her to a character from Shrek.

Streep, 68, sent Twitter wild over her uncanny likeness to the Fairy Godmother as she hit the red carpet for the 90th Academy Awards.

Streep – who was nominated for Best Actress – wore a plunging red dress which she teamed with a pair of glasses in an unintentional nod to the animated character.

Viewers were left in hysterics at the likeness, with one tweeting: “Meryl Streep really out there looking like the Fairy Godmother from Shrek 2 lol.”

Another wrote: “S/O to Meryl Streep who looks like the Fairy Godmother from Shrek #Oscars #SheDontNeedAHeroTho #ShesHerOwn.”

Others called for a “live action” remake of Shrek 2 so they can see Streep take on the role, which was originally voiced by Jennifer Saunders.

The actress also recreated her previous awards show meme, by cat calling her friends as they took to the stage.

It comes three years after she went viral after being pictured calling out to Debbie Reynolds at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Making a meme: Meryl Streep won over Twitter

Streep missed out on the coveted Best Actress gong last night for her role in The Post. Frances McDormand picked up the accolade as she continued her awards haul.

McDormand, who was honoured for her role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, called on Streep as she invited all of the female nominees to stand in a bid to highlight the lack of women in the 24 categories.

She said: “If I may be so honoured to have all the female nominees in every category stand with me in this room tonight, the actors – Meryl, if you do it, everybody else will, c’mon – the filmmakers, the producers, the directors, the writers, the cinematographer, the composers, the songwriters, the designers. C’mon!
