Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger attempted to make light of the news that Donald Trump is the new President of the United States – but people aren’t impressed.

Jagger, 73, joked that he could sing one of his hits at Trump’s inauguration next year after the business tycoon mocked the band by playing You Can't Always Get What You Want at the end of his victory speech.

Reacting to the news that Trump defeated rival Hillary Clinton in the race for the Whitehouse, Jagger tweeted: “Just was watching the news... maybe they'll ask me to sing 'You Can't Always Get What You Want' at the inauguration, ha!!”

Jagger’s followers were left unimpressed so soon after the election result, with one posting: “You can't be serious.”

Others saw the funny side and took to suggesting what they saw as more appropriate song choices.

One user offered Sympathy For The Devil while another suggested Gimme Shelter.

It is not the first time Trump has used a Rolling Stones song during a political speech. In May he walked out of his Indiana primary victory speech to Start Me Up.

In July he closed the Republican National Convention with You Can’t Always Get What You Want.

Making their feelings clear about Trump they tweeted at the time: “The Rolling Stones do not endorse Donald Trump. You Can’t Always Get What You Want was used without the band’s permission.”

A spokesperson for the band also said: “The Rolling Stones have never given permission to the Trump campaign to use their songs and have requested that they cease all use immediately.”

Adele, Queen’s Brian May and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler have all hit out at Trump for the unauthorised use of their hits at political rallies.
