Londoner Daniel Kaluuya joined co-stars including Lupita Nyong’o and Letitia Wright at the world premiere of superhero film Black Panther in Los Angeles.

The movie is Marvel’s first to star a black lead — American actor Chadwick Boseman, 41. He plays T’Challa, king of the African state of Wakanda, and his superhero alter-ego Black Panther.

Kaluuya, 28, who was nominated for an Oscar last week, plays W’Kabi, his second-in-command.

Other British stars at the premiere included Martin Freeman and David Oyelowo.

Director Ryan Coogler said that he drew inspiration from 1970s shows and film such as the James Bond franchise.

"A Prophet deals with secret societies and cultural ties, so that was a big influence [on Black Panther]," he recently told Fandango.

"I also watched a lot of Coppola’s work from the ’70s. We were looking at all of that stuff and also watched a lot of the James Bond films, but not the new ones.

"I wanted to watch the ones that were made in the ’60s and ’70s. I watched Goldfinger for the first time, and I just thought it was really interesting in terms of how James Bond was handy."

The film, which is released in the UK on February 12, has been widely acclaimed in early reviews.
