Lena Dunham has teamed up with her Girls co-stars for a new video to support the victims of sexual assault.

The actress and writer reunited with friends Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke and Zosia Mamet to film a public message urging fans to help survivors have their voices heard.

Dedicating the clip to the Stanford University sexual assault victim, the stars ask viewers to ‘support, listen and take action’.

Sharing the new video on her Twitter account Dunham wrote: “I dedicate this to the brave survivor in the Stanford case who has given so much to change the conversation.”

Speaking in the video, the actresses say: “We may star on Girls together, but that doesn't mean we always agree.

“We sometimes vote for different candidates. We have very different views on appropriate undergarments. Lena thinks you should wash you should only wash your hair once a week.

“But there is one issue on which we are in total agreement.”

They go on to give statistics compiled by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, saying:

“1 in 5 women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime and 80% of those attacks will be committed by someone they know. I in 4 girls will be sexually abused before they are 18.”

The actress then ask: “Why is it default reaction, as a society to disbelieve, silence and shame?

“What if we choose to turn towards those in need, instead of away?”

The video is a reaction to the recent case of Brock Turner, who was sentenced to just six months in jail after being found guilty of three sexual assault charges.
