Kristen Stewart received a standing ovation at the premiere of new film Personal Shopper, despite the film being booed at a screening earlier in the week.

The A-lister was reportedly over-the-moon when the audience rose to their feet and applauded for nearly five minutes on Tuesday evening.

Despite the fact that that Olivier Assayas’s surreal new film was met with a chorus of boos during a press screening on Monday, it seems that the Cannes audience were feeling more generous at the official opening.

Film critic Chris Gardner wrote: “Kristen Stewart, Assayas receive 4:30 min standing o for #PersonalShopper. #KStew looks stoked, hugging costars.”

The film, about to fashion PA who is able to communicate with her dead brother, has proved divisive with critics.

Despite the negative audience reaction at the first screening, many critics have lauded Stewart’s performance as her best yet.

Guardian critic Nigel M. Smith said: “Personal Shopper got the first boos I heard at #Cannes2016, which led me to only clap harder. I found it beguiling. Stewart is mesmerizing.”

Speaking at the festival, Stewart said: “What’s exciting about Cannes is that yesterday no one had seen this film and today it’s in front of the whole world. It’s a very instant, very powerful moment. It’s like giving birth.

“People have expectations about what it will be. You expect anything at Cannes. You just go with the flow.”

Stewart has also been promoting Woody Allen’s new film Cafe Society at this year’s festival.
