Kristen Stewart’s Personal Shopper received a rather strong reaction when it screened at the Cannes Film Festival.

While many films get a standing ovation after their first showing, the A-lister’s new project was actually booed by the audience on Monday night.

According to Variety, a chorus of boos were heard as the credits rolled on Olivier Assayas’s surreal new film, despite the fact that many critics cheered.

Film critic Peter Debruge tweeted: “There’s a certain perverse genius to unveiling a ghost movie at Cannes that relies on the audience to deliver the ‘boos’ as the final credits roll, although one doubts that’s quite what Olivier Assayas was going for with his peculiar ‘Personal Shopper’.”

Guardian critic Nigel M. Smith added: “Personal Shopper got the first boos I heard at #Cannes2016, which led me to only clap harder. I found it beguiling. Stewart is mesmerizing.”

Despite the audience reaction, the film has mainly received positive reviews and Stewart’s performance is being lauded as one of her best.

Teaming up with Assayas for a second time, after he directed her in 2014’s Clouds of Sils Maria, Stewart plays a personal shopper who is able to communicate with spirits.

The film is screening in competition at this year’s festival, which means that it is in the running for the coveted Palme D’Or.

Stewart also stars in Woody Allen’s Café Society, which opened this year’s film festival last week, receiving a standing ovation after its first screening.
