Katy Perry took her penchant for fancy dress to the next level ahead of the first at-home episode of American Idol.

The singer, 35, dressed up as a giant bottle of hand sanitiser to remind viewers of the importance of good hygiene practices during the coronavirus outbreak.

In a video clip shared on her Instagram account, the talent show judge washed up a bowl while wearing the bizarre costume, which had the words “American Idol Instant Music Sanitiser” written on it.

"Katy Perry here, reminding you to stay safe, wash your hands and tune in to an all new, like never before, episode of American Idol,” she said, before filling the bowl with crisps and walking off through her home - bumping into a door due to her unwieldy costume in the process.

She then shared a series of images showing her filming set up for the special episode, which marks the first time the long-running talent contest has been filmed remotely.

One photo showed Perry, still dressed in her sanitiser outfit, sitting on a chair in her “home studio,” with a mobile phone placed on a tripod for filming.

Another showed the lighting used to give the makeshift studio a more professional effect as well as two extra monitors, allowing Perry to see her colleagues.

“Welcome to my home studio!” she wrote in her caption.

The at-home episode of American Idol saw the top 20 contestants from the current series perform remotely, with Perry’s fellow judges Lionel Ritchie and Luke Bryan also taking part from the comfort of their own homes.

The series is set to continue with more remote episodes while social distancing measures are still in place to combat the spread of coronavirus.
