Katie Hopkins was compared to Star Wars villain Jabba The Hutt after she posted a “nasty” tweet following the news of Carrie Fisher’s death.

The actress died on Tuesday, aged 60, four days after she suffered a heart attack on board a flight from London to Los Angeles.

Hopkins, 41, infuriated fans when she bemoaned the prospect of covering the story on her LBC radio show.

Tweeting her 670,000 followers she wrote: “B***** hell. Please don't tell me I have to spend my time on radio tomorrow talking about floral tributes and tea candles to #CarrieFisher.”

One user posted a picture from A New Hope showing Fisher as Princess Leia wrestling with Jabba The Hutt.

They captioned the shot: “I bet you've never forgiven her for this scene (although I thought you were quite good in it).”

Another called on LBC to fire the former Celebrity Big Brother star, writing: “LBC are you that desperate to support this awful excuse of a human @KTHopkins , her comments are really nasty and unacceptable #sackhopkins.”

A third said: “A woman with dignity, intelligence, talent and something worth saying. No wonder you don't want to talk about her.”

Hopkins later criticised those paying tribute on Twitter, posting: “Newsflash: Twitter is not church. If you want to ‘pay your respect’, you will need to get your phoney a*** off the sofa.”

New of her death was announced in a statement released on behalf of Fisher's daughter Billie Lourd on Tuesday.

"It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8.55am this morning," it read.

"She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers."

Fisher's Star Wars co-star Mark Hamill said he had been left "devastated", while Harrison Ford - who Fisher claimed she had a three month romance with in the 1970s - described her as "one-of-a-kind... brilliant, original. Funny and emotionally fearless."
