Justin Bieber couldn’t resist calling out Shawn Mendes after he was hailed the Prince of Pop on the cover of a magazine.

Mendes was given the prestigious title by Observer Magazine but was met with immediate disapproval from Bieber, who quickly attempted to dethrone the star after he shared the cover on his Instagram account.

The Sorry singer mocked his fellow Canadian star, writing: “Hmm. Gonna have to break a few more records to dethrone my title there bud (Canadian voice)..but if you want we can play hockey for it but I heard your a real bender on the ice we could just drop the buckets and tilt for it." [sic]

Bieber was forced to defend himself after he was with a backlash from Mendes' fans, adding that it was “a playful joke”.

He wrote: “There is no competition and it was playful joke people need to relax. There’s not sides we’re all just here to make dope music. I’m just [as] competitive as is he so it was just a little playful jargon.”

Proving it was all in good spirits Treat You Better hit maker Mendes responded: “LOL any time any day you just let me know!!!”

The hilarious dig is not the first time Bieber has been forced to apologise.

The prank was blasted by fans online and branded “disgusting” by online users.

He then released a lengthy apology saying that he had the “roll that dice” with the joke.

Bieber wrote: “There's always gonna be people offended, there's also people who don't take jokes very well, I am a prankster and it was APRIL FOOLS. I didn't at all mean to be insensitive to people who can't have children.

“A lot of people I know, their first go to prank on April Fools is telling their parents they are pregnant to get a big reaction. But I will apologise anyway and take responsibility and say sorry to people who were offended. I truly don’t want anyone to be hurt by a prank.”
