Justin Bieber has been charged with assaulting a limousine driver in Toronto, days after being arrested in Florida and charged with drink-driving.

The star was mobbed by fans and members of the media as he handed himself in at a police station last night and was arrested.

Police say Bieber was one of six people who were picked up by a limousine outside a nightclub in the early hours of December 30.

“While driving the group to a hotel, an altercation occurred between one of the passengers and the driver of the limousine,” a police statement said.

“In the course of the altercation, a man struck the limousine driver on the back of the head several times. The driver stopped the limousine, exited the vehicle and called police. The man who struck him left the scene before police arrived.”

Bieber, 19, has been charged with one count of assault and is scheduled to appear in court in Toronto on March 10. Howard Weitzman, his California-based lawyer, said: “Our position is that Mr Bieber is innocent.”

Last Thursday, Bieber was arrested in Miami Beach after a police officer pulled him over on suspicion of racing a hired yellow Lamborghini on a public street and being intoxicated.

The singer was also charged with resisting arrest and driving on an expired licence, to which he has pleaded not guilty.

He is also under investigation for vandalism over an egg-throwing incident in which his neighbour’s home in Calabasas, near Los Angeles, was damaged.

Police searched his home and prosecutors are seeking more information before deciding whether to pursue charges.

Last night, his manager Scooter Braun tweeted: “I ask people to be kind and hope for the best in people. Not assume the worst. Thanks.”

An online petition seeking the deportation of Bieber from the US to his native Canada has exceeded the 100,000 signatures needed to require a response from the White House.
