Jake Kasdan will direct the new Jumanji film, according to reports.

Kasdan – who is famed for directing Sex Tape and Bad Teacher – will take the helm while Matt Tolmach will produce, Deadline reported.

The new film will be based on a script by the writers of the original 1995 film – Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.

It will be adapted by writers Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner.

It is unclear who will star, but Sony is said to be “moving aggressively” for a December 25 release date.

The original film, which was based on Chris Van Allsburg’s 1981 book of the same name, starred Robin Williams and a young Kirsten Dunst.

The Joe Johnston directed film followed two children as they battled jungle animals and armed hunter Van Pelt after playing the board game.

It grossed over $260 million globally and in 1996 a three-season cartoon spinoff aired in the US. But a second film, Zathura, flopped on release in 2005.
